The Aquarium of Genoa, Italy’s largest aquarium

The Aquarium of Genoa is Italy’s largest aquarium and the second largest in Europe. The building was designed by Renzo Piano and contains water tanks with dolphins, sharks, seals and other marine species.

But Genoa is not only famous for its aquarium; it is also the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. The city is divided into two contrasting parts: the commercial centre and the historic centre. The commercial centre is known for its shipping harbour, whereas a somewhat mysterious aura can be felt in the historic part of the city. The oldest part of Genoa is a labyrinth of alleys and straight roads called “caruggi”. The Duke’s Palace was renovated in 1992 and re-opened on the occasion of the Columbus Exhibition to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas. The renovation of the Old Port; the Porto Antico, was completed in the same year and many touristic, musical and sports events have been held there since.
